Ann Arbor is located in Southeast Michigan in Washtenaw County. It is just 45 miles west of Detroit and 55 miles north of the Ohio border. Founded in 1824 and incorporated in 1833, by land speculators, John Allen and Elisha Rumsey, the city is home to Michigan's oldest university, the University of Michigan.

The Census of 2000 indicated that there were 114,024 people residing in the city. With the presence of the University of Michigan, many estimate that almost half of the 114,000 residents are students, faculty or staff members.
